Recent years, Rizhao has adhered to the principles of planning and construction with high standard, management with high efficiency and made great efforts to develop the urban planting along the sea and manage the urban planting according to the law. With the objective of “building a coastal city with international standard”, Rizhao spares no efforts to improve the level of urban greening and strives to build Rizhao into a modern coastal garden Ecocity. Rizhao successively initiated large-scaled environmental greening for urban and surrounding areas. Agreening system, which combines arbors, shrubs and flowers, is formed initially.The urban greening is characteristic of “large green space, gardenable, open and ecological”. By the end of 2004, the greening space for urban built up area of Rizhao has reached 1,865.9 hectares with the greening rate of 34.01 percent and the greening coverage rate of 39%. The public green space per capita has increased to 19 m3 comparing with 10.5 m3 at the end of the period of 9th Five –Year Plan. The quality of air and water near the coast is up to the first level of the National Standard. At the end of 2005, Rizhao successfully passed the verification and acceptance of National Garden City, therefore, on January 23rd,2006 , it was awarded National Garden City by the Ministry of Construction after Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai of Shandong Province.
