| Rizhao was approved as the social development comprehensive experimental zone at a provincial level in October 1993 and passed verification and acceptance checks in November 1997. In November 1999, it was designated as the National Sustainable Development Experimental Zone.
In October 2003, it passed the mid-term examination for National Sustainable Development Experimental Zone. The work of Rizhao Experimental Zone received fully confirmation from the superiors. The Administrative Office of National Sustainable Development Experimental Zone introduced the experience of Rizhao to the whole country for several times. In 1998 and 2002, the experience of Rizhao was introduced to U.N Special Conference on Sustainable Development and U.N. World Summit on Sustainable Development separately. In May 2003, Mr. Li Zhaoqian, former mayor of Rizhao was invited to attend the preparatory session of U.N. World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Bali , Indonesia , which expanded the influence of Rizhao on fields of Sustainable Development in the world.
