Since China opened to the outside world, Rizhao has experienced steady increase in international exchanges. The external cooperation and exchanges are enjoying fast growth and the international links of Rizhao have covered more than 100 countries and regions. Rizhao attaches great importance to developing the friendly relations with cities around the world. It has established sister-city relations with Trabzon of Turkey, Gisborne District of New Zealand, Muroran of Japan and Coatzacoalcos of Mexico, and promoted friendly relations with more than 20 cities in Israel, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Germany, USA, Canada, Netherlands and Australia etc.
In 2002, Rizhao successfully won the right of hosting 2005 International Europe Class World Championship and 2006 International 470 Class World Championship. 2005 International Europe Class World Championship & International Neil Pryde RS: X China International Invitation Tournament were held in Rizhao, which caused wide public concern from home and abroad.
